Immigrant Family & Community Engagement | Part 1

Family engagement in increasingly being used as a strategy to support student achievement and to close opportunity gaps. Increase your knowledge of how to build rewarding relationships with your school community. This is Part 2 of 2, which is then followed up with a course on parent leadership to complete the Pathway.

Learning Objectives

• Acquire information on the Dual Capacity Building Framework and other theories from the field of family engagement
• Gain awareness of the journeys, strengths, and challenges of immigrant families, particularly in regards to their interactions with schools
• Increase knowledge of how to welcome and provide language access for immigrant families

• Discover strategies for increasing the capacity of immigrant families and school staff for engaging in partnerships; and
• Apply the Dual Capacity Building Framework specifically to English learner/immigrant family engagement.

COURSE 3

Cultivating Leadership Skills Among Immigrant & English Learner Parents

Develop the leadership skills in your community.
During this course we discuss programs and strategies for cultivating leadership skills among refugee and immigrant parents for engaging in decision-making and advocacy at the school and district levels. This is Part 3 of 3 of the Parent Engagement Pathway.

Learning Objectives

• Increase knowledge of the importance of refugee and immigrant parent leadership in discussions around staffing and the school board budget, as well as committees on equity, bullying and more
• Gain awareness of programs being used in school districts to develop the capacity of refugee and immigrant parent leaders; and
• Learn about the relationship between family engagement initiatives and community organizing, particularly for refugee and immigrant families.
