I'm Kelly Reider
Founder of English Learner Portal
When I was a baby teacher, I had no clue I'd have to teach students to read. The university program prepared me to teach comprehension, but failed to mention that not everyone would know how to read by 3rd grade. I'm a language teacher. I thought my job was to just help them to speak English. Boy was I WRONG!! Yes, now, 30 years later, I do get that literacy is part of language. :-)
After meeting my first two students (grades 3 & 5) who were not yet able to read independently, I had no choice but to begin a mission that grew and shifted over many years. I would love to find Jesus and Ciro to apologize for what I didn't know back then.
What began as a desperate move purchasing a "Hooked on Phonics" kit, has morphed into a well researched, consistently successful approach to language and literacy. Let me save you a LOT of time. It doesn't have to be so complicated!
Worried about cost?
We know that teachers are often covering their own professional development. If you need financial support, you can request a payment plan at [email protected] or explore one of the following options:
- ask your district's Title I, Title II, or Title III office is there is any grant funding available
- reach out to a local business that supports the teacher and immigrant communities
- request funding through DonorsChoose.org
- Does your district offer any kind of tuition reimbursement? (1 graduate credit from UMassGlobal is available for completion of this course)
- Perhaps your PTA would support your learning?
