Exciting Updates for the 2024-25 School Year!

Starting July 1, 2024, we are thrilled to offer a year-long beginning English language development curriculum for grades 3-5 and 9-12. This comprehensive curriculum includes PBL units, grammar supplements, multicultural arts lessons, and social-emotional well-being lessons.

Additionally, throughout the 2024-25 school year, we will expand our curriculum to include grades K-2 and 6-8 units. One new unit per quarter ensures that teachers always have engaging and effective materials to use throughout the school year.

NOTE:  The curriculum units are designed for Tier 1 instruction in English language development programs or as supplementary Tier 1 instruction for students who need extra language and literacy support. They are not intended to replace reading instruction provided by a certified reading teacher.

Discover the English Learner Portal Curriculum Units

Unlock your students' potential with English Learner Portal's curriculum units, expertly designed to transform the learning experience through Project-Based Learning (PBL). Our curriculum units are meticulously crafted to systematically develop English proficiency and content knowledge through a systemic functional linguistics approach.

Our curriculum units employ a spiraling approach in their scope and sequence. This method ensures that various language forms, functions, grammar points, and foundational literacy skills are revisited across units, providing students with multiple opportunities to develop a broad range of skills. These units support students in reaching an intermediate proficiency level and can be easily extended into the advanced proficiency levels.

Why Choose English Learner Portal Curriculum Units?

GOLD STANDARD PBL DESIGN

Each unit follows the principles of Gold Standard PBL, guaranteeing a consistent educational experience.

INTEGRATED LEARNING

Our units integrate multiple content area standards, providing a holistic learning approach that captures students' interests, develops background knowledge, and fosters a deeper understanding of various content-area topics.

STANDARDS ALIGNMENT

The units are aligned to the 2020 WIDA English Language Development Standards, Common Core Math and ELA Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and C3 for Social Studies. Alignment to other standards is available upon request.

ADAPTABLE TO ALL LEVELS

While our units are designed to target beginning English speakers (with language targets set for proficiency levels 2-3), the units are easily adaptable to meet diverse proficiency levels, grade levels, and educational backgrounds.

REAL-LIFE APPLICATION

By utilizing the PBL and functional linguistics approach, students practice their English skills in meaningful, real-life contexts, which gives them a genuine motivation to communicate effectively and improves their language acquisition in practical academic scenarios.

ENGAGEMENT & MOTIVATION

Our project-based learning units create a high-interest learning environment, encouraging students to actively participate in their education and fostering a lifelong love for learning.

Our comprehensive approach integrates research from the literacy and language development fields, ensuring that every student receives the highest-quality education tailored to their unique needs.

WHY CHOOSE ENGLISH LEARNER PORTAL's LITERACY SUPPLEMENTS?

  1. Research-Based Approach: Our language and literacy instruction is grounded in extensive research from Systemic Functional Linguistics, The Science of Reading, The National Reading Panel, and The Center of Applied Linguistics. We also draw on the pivotal insights summarized in “A Framework for Foundational Literacy Skills Instruction for English Learners” by the Council of Great City Schools.
  2. Meaning-Making Process: English Learner Portal's approach emphasizes a “whole to part” methodology, enabling students to create and understand meaning from the beginning. This method supports the development of strong language and literacy skills.
  3. Sequential Lesson Design: Our lesson sequences guide students through a comprehensive literacy journey:
    • Oral Language Development: Students first build strong vocabulary and oral language skills.
    • Co-Created Writing: These skills are then transitioned into collaborative writing activities.
    • Reading: Foundational skills are embedded, and students consistently read above their comfort level using the co-created text.
    • Independent Writing: Finally, they move on to independent writing, embedding their knowledge and enhancing their confidence.
    • Collaborative Learning Environment: Our approach fosters a collaborative and engaging learning environment where students feel supported and motivated. This collaborative setting enhances meaning-making and reinforces literacy and communication skills.

EL Portal is an exceptional service for districts needing professional development to guide teachers towards working with multilingual learners. Kelly was flexible and responsive to our needs. As a district-level coach, I was able to use EL Portal to develop targeted PD towards what our teachers requested and where we saw areas for growth. EL Portal is connected to the top names in our field in terms of theory and practice in working with MLs. When we began working with them, we knew we would be getting the very best guidance and training. MLP Specialists were enthusiastic in their praise of the strategies Kelly presented to them and the discussions she led.
